Recreation - Science Vale

When people turn to sport at Science Vale, they do it for the love of fresh air and freedom – for the thrill of rowing on the River Thames or hiking and cycling the Ridgeway from end to end.

With two areas of outstanding natural beauty on your doorstep, you’ll enjoy near-limitless walking, cycling and riding. And anyone who loves the water – anglers, rowers, or boaters – will find everything they could wish for on the wide, majestic River Thames.

At Science Vale you can get your pulse racing by pushing yourself to the limit or by packing a picnic and heading for the hills. There are sports facilities across the region.  Didcot has its Leisure Centre and its Wave Leisure Pool; Wantage has its Leisure Centre with gym, pool and sauna. There’s outdoor gym equipment at Abingdon, Didcot, Milton Park and Harwell and plenty of shared facilities in the region’s schools and colleges.

Tilsley Park in Abingdon has the region’s only 4G synthetic pitch with full flood lighting.  There’s also an athletics track, two hockey pitches and several 5-a-side pitches.  Abingdon is home too, to the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre, a nationally important centre for tennis coaching.

A landscape created for sports enthusiasts
Cyclists will love our Phoenix Trail and Hanson Way, while mountain bikers head for the Ridgeway and other routes across the Downs.

Close by there’s horse racing at Newbury, football at Reading and Oxford, or hang gliding from the chalky hills of the Downs and the Chilterns.  Our biggest sporting event of the year is the Henley Regatta.  Not that you need to be sporty to enjoy it.  The Regatta is just as much fun if your only activity is to lift a glass of champagne to your lips.
